Hi everyone, my name is James Pengelly and I’m an Air Traffic Controller at Tauranga Airport (NZTG) here in New Zealand.
I’ve been interested in all things aviation related for as long as I can remember and started flying RC models competitively when I was about 15. Shortly after that I started a small model aircraft manufacturing business to help fund my hobby and since then it has grown slowly to now occupy a large part of my time (and workshop). If you’re interested in RC models then have a look at my business website: FOAMWORKS.
From 1999 through till 2004 I flew gliders and have logged about 140 hours and hold a ‘C’ category instructor rating. I really enjoy silent flight and one day will get back into regular soaring. Perhaps after the RV-7A my next project could be a SG-1 sailplane being developed here in New Zealand by Gregg MacPherson - a project I was lucky to have had some involvement with.
In 2002 I started training as an Air Traffic Controller and in 2003 obtained my initial aerodrome control rating at Hamilton (NZHN) before moving here to Tauranga. It was probably that move to Tauranga that resulted in me deciding to build my own aircraft as the homebuilt movement at this airfield is very much alive and well with numerous projects underway in various hangars at any one time.
I’m very lucky to have the full support of my wife Shontelle and the brilliant assistance of my little workshop helper, Alex.
